Become a foster parent and help educate a child for as little as $15/month

We have partnered with Karuna Trust--a nonprofit based in Sri Lanka--to provide an education oriented foster parent program for children who have lost one or both parents to the tsunami. Most of these children have also lost their homes and are still in refugee camps. Without the proper financial help, they are at risk of dropping out from school.

The goal of the program is to minimize the psychological impact to the children by providing shelter, financial aid, clothing, nutrition, and books. We will achieve this goal by working jointly with the schools and families of the children.

You can become a foster parent by sponsoring a child for a year or more through monthly credit card payments. Please note that we have no administrative costs, and your contributions will be allocated a 100% towards the sponsorship of the child.

There are currently over fifty children in the Foster Parent program.

Karuna Trust will work with a number of schools in the South of Sri Lanka to implement this program. They will have the full support of the school principal to ensure that the donated money is allocated only for approved expenditures. For every sponsored child, the donated money is placed in a newly opened individual bank account. Money can be withdrawn from the account only with the joint approval of the school principal and a parent or guardian of the child. The children will be monitored without hindering their dignity or self confidence.

This program is for children who have lost one or both parents to the tsunami disaster. Only children under the age of 16 years will be considered as beneficiaries.

Please note that your entire donation will go directly to the child since we have no administrative overhead. We will also assist the parent or the guardian of the child by helping them find employment or by training them for self employment opportunities.

Once we have identified the beneficiary child, you will receive details about the child including photographs. You will have the ability to contact the child directly if you wish although the ability to receive regular replies is largely depended on the child's comfort with the English language, educational level, and desire to correspond. In addition to your donation, you can also send gifts to the child to commemorate special occasions such as a birthday or a holiday.

We have two levels of sponsorship for your consideration. You can choose to sponsor a child for one, two, or three years. Your credit card will be billed on a monthly basis for the chosen duration.

The Foster Parent program is already in progress with over fifty children currently in the program.
